Lowery Chesapeake Watershed Archaeological Research Foundation Clovis along the Middle Atlantic Margins: An Overview of the Paleo-Indian Archaeological Record for the Delmarva Peninsula Abstract: The Paleo-Indian archaeological record for the Delmarva Peninsula area is extensive and has been largely misinterpreted or misrepresented by previous researchers. Clovis type projectile points and Clovis-era archaeological sites are common from the perspective of some other regions in North America. Conservatively, 350 to 500 fluted projectile points have been found in the region and several sites with intact archaeological components have been tested. In the coastal plain of the Delmarva Peninsula, there are indications that the Paleo-Indian occupants did not travel great distances and may have had regionally defined territories. Combined with the extensive Clovis archaeological record, the data indirectly suggest that there had to be pre-Clovis settlements in the Middle Atlantic region. The Delmarva Paleo-Indian archaeological record also provides some interesting insights into the paleoclimatic record and the site formation processes associated with areas impacted by Holocene marine transgression and coastal inundation. |
